The Importance of Stormwater Drainage

Stormwater drainage is important for cities to prevent flooding. Take Manhattan for example; Central Park, Riverside Park and a few other parks around the city are the only grassy areas where rainwater can be absorbed in New York City; the rest of the city is covered in concrete and asphalt. These cities have complex drainage systems. Without good stormwater drainage systems the water would have nowhere to go and the city would quickly flood. For people who live in cities with stormwater drainage systems, it is important to do everything we can to keep pollution and waste to a minimum. Unfortunately, when it rains, waste can be washed into drainage systems and be carried to larger bodies of water. While stormwater drainage systems keep us safe and prevent flooding, we must do our part to ensure that essential systems like stormwater drainage are good for the environment.
